James Jones to be a Portland Blazer for 08-09 season?
James Jones was certainly one of many bright spots last season for the Portland Trailblazers. After being acquired in a trade exemption from the Phoenix Suns, James Jones burst onto the scene and became an early fan favorite with his three point shooting ability (44.4%), clutch play(87% free throw shooting), and veteran leadership for the third youngest team in NBA History.
But the decision about where Jones will play basketball next season rests completely in his hands at this point. Jones has a $3.2 Million player option for next season, and has until June 25th to make that decision. Of course with the NBA draft the following day this can put added pressure on the 27 year old forward depending on who he thinks the Blazers may be targeting at the #13 pick.
With Jones, Martell Webster, and Travis Outlaw, the TrailBlazers had plenty of talent at the SF position last season, but with this talent came limited playing time for Jones as he averaged 22 minutes a game coming off the bench. If Jones feels like he can earn substantial playing time somewhere else, he may just punch his ticket out of Portland, and opt to become a free agent.
Jones has said that he enjoyed playing in Portland last season, enjoyed the fans, atmosphere, and was very optimistic in the way the organization appears to be heading, but Jones also has said there are many factors that will calculate into his decision, none perhaps more important than securing a long-term deal.
Only time will tell what future awaits Jones, but that leaves us with plenty of time to debate about whether or not he should be a part of this Blazer franchise.
What do you think? Do you want Jones to stay with the team, or would you rather he pack his bags and head for another NBA team. Let your voice be heard and also stay tuned for updates with this situation.
